How to play the Queens game

The Queens game is a crown-placement logic puzzle from the classic Star Battle family — the same rule set made famous by LinkedIn's daily game. The board is divided into colored regions, and your goal is simple to state but tricky to do: place exactly one crown in every row, every column and every color region, with no two crowns touching each other, not even diagonally.

Tap a cell once to mark it with an ✕ (meaning "no crown here"), tap again to place a crown, and tap a third time to clear it. On a computer you can also drag across cells to paint ✕ marks quickly, or right-click to drop a crown directly. Turn on Auto-✕ in settings and the game will cross out every cell a new crown eliminates, so you can focus on the logic instead of the bookkeeping.

Queens game strategy tips

Start with the smallest regions: a color region of only one or two cells pins its crown down almost immediately, and every placed crown eliminates its whole row, column and neighborhood. Next, look for regions that live entirely inside one row or column — that row or column is now spoken for, which often eliminates cells in neighboring regions. When two regions can only fit their crowns in the same two rows, no other region may use those rows. If you're stuck, pick the emptiest row and try each remaining cell in your head: a well-made Queens game always has exactly one logical way forward, so a contradiction is information, never a dead end.
